EndNote: Oxford Law style OSCOLA

  • EndNote icon article | Publicly viewable

The main legal citation style in the UK is the Oxford Standard for the Citation of Legal Authorities (OSCOLA). A corresponding output style can be downloaded and included in EndNote's repertoire of styles.

The OSCOLA style is not provided as standard in EndNote, but can be downloaded (for free) from http://www.law.ox.ac.uk/publications/oscola_endnote.php. “OSCOLA 2 4th edn” is the version that is customised for use on personal computers.

The OSCOLA 2 4th edn version also has customised reference types and field headings, so you must download and import an xml file called ‘reftypetable’. Installation instructions are provided on the OSCOLA EndNote web page.

Once the style is installed, you choose ‘Select Another Style’ in the EndNote toolbar or Ribbon in Word, and search for OSCOLA.

If all these steps are not followed, citations will not format correctly in footnotes and bibliographies.

The OSCOLA style is also available in EndNote Online, if you log in as an Oxford University user.
