Forums and discussion boards

A discussion board or forum is an online area where participants exchange their views and opinions on a given topic by posting messages.

The discussions are usually asynchronous so participants do not all have to be available at the same time. Postings to the forum are stored and displayed together with previous messages in the same discussion or 'thread' so it is possible to read and contribute to an exchange at different times. Forums are often used to exchange views (see for example BBC message boards) or to ask questions and get advice or share knowledge and ideas, such as Methodspace (research methods community forum) , Student Doctor Network Forums, All About Circuits forums, Ubuntu Forums. Some forums are open to everyone while others may be available to members only.

Discussion forums are sometimes also known as bulletin boards or internet forums.
